Lets Know More About .GDN Generic Extensions

The .gdn extension is a new generic extension that allows businesses and individuals to secure an additional domain name to represent their brands online. The .gdn extension stands for "global domain name" and is an exciting alternative for brands to expand and protect their domain portfolios. The .gdn extension is available for brands of all types - including small to large businesses and individual entities and groups as well.

Just like its non-generic TLD counterparts like .com, .net and.org - the new .gdn extension is easy to remember and works well with current brand domain extensions as well. The .gdn extension provides one more way for brands to secure their trademarks and keep them safe from would-be cyberthieves.

Early registration for the .gdn began on August 31, 2015 for registered trademark owners. This initial Sunrise registration period provides exclusive access to trademark owners to secure their .gdn extensions before they are released to the general public.

The Sunrise period ends on November 28, 2015 at which time the remaining extensions that haven't been claimed by trademark owners will be available for public registration. This leaves the door wide open for would-be cyber thieves to pounce on trademark domains and wreak havoc on unsuspecting trademarked brands whose owners fail to secure their .gdn extensions before the Sunrise period ended.

Those who register for a .gdn will be pleased to know that their registration also includes a number of free perks as well, like:

  • Location based email targeting for potential clients
  • Verified email database with unlimited email service
  • Optional user mailbox with more than 100 professional email templates

In order to be eligible for Sunrise registration of the .gdn extensions, there are a few requirements that must be followed:

  •  An SMD file issued by the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) is required to prove the validity and ownership of the trademark to be registered as a .gdn extension.
  •  The .gdn domain can't begin or end with a hyphen
  • The .gdn domain has to be 63 characters or shorter in length
